CASE STUDY

Corran Ferry, Nether Lochaber

The Corran Ferry serves the population of Ardnamurchan across the Corran Narrows of Loch Linnhe in Scotland and is an important transport artery. Deterioration of the slipway used by the ferry was investigated by R G Parkins. These investigations revealed significant accelerated low water corrosion in the supporting sheet piles as well as breakdown of the concrete surface. A scheme of repairs was prepared which included a new surface and in-situ concrete berthing face.

Public disquiet over potential closure of the ferry during the work brought the client to consider a novel approach of providing a temporary floating pontoon and linkspan to serve the community during the contract works. After 15 weeks on-site works were completed in December 2010.

R G Parkins were involved in the investigations and design of remedial works, preparation of contract documents and undertaking CDM Co-ordinator duties.

The Oban Times have published a short clip of the slipway on their website here.
