Guldrey Lodge, Sedbergh

Guldrey Lodge is a large, detached Victorian building in extensive grounds, on Station Road in Sedbergh.

The property has been used for several years as the music department of Sedbergh School, where music is taught and practised. Being built as a gentleman’s residence, the building consisted of many large rooms on two floors, with further space available in the basement and the loft. Whilst many of the rooms were large, on a domestic scale, they were still prohibitive and undesirable when it came to acoustics and accommodating groups of instrument playing pupils.

It was decided to make major changes to the building, so that more useable space could be created; acoustics improved in some areas and rooms enlarged to the extent that a small orchestra could be accommodated in a rehearsal room with limited seating for spectators.

The useable space in the existing building has approximately 390m2, and this was to be increased to 680m2, largely by conversion of the loft and basement spaces.

R G Parkins & Partners Ltd were commissioned along with JMP Architects Ltd of Lancaster to achieve the requirements of the school.

A full survey of the structure was undertaken and plans were developed which included the removal of some of the internal load-bearing walls to allow existing rooms to be combined to form larger spaces. The basement was also modified to provide various practice booths and recording studios, again, this involved the removal of some significant load-bearing walls, and extensive works including lowering the existing floor and installing an insulated, waterproofed lining system.

The conversion of the loft space was very involved due to the complex layout of the original roof structure and the position of the supporting brick piers etc.

The work was undertaken by Brown & Whittaker in 2009 and the successful completion and use of the building had led to a further, new purpose-built rehearsal room being constructed in 2011, which will greatly extend the facilities of the music department.
